About Chengdu

The most convenient bases in Chengdu are Jinjiang District near Tianfu Square, walkable to the city's main metro hub; Qingyang District for Kuanzhai Alley and traditional teahouse culture; and Wuhou District for Sichuan cuisine streets near the Wu Hou Shrine. Most visitors stay three to four nights; Tianfu International Airport is 51 km south of the centre.

Where to Stay

Jinjiang District anchors Chengdu's commercial core. Hotels sit within walking distance of Tianfu Square and connect directly to Metro Lines 1 and 2. Business travellers and first-time visitors favour this area for its transit links and dense restaurant options.

Qingyang District holds Kuanzhai Alley (Wide and Narrow Alley), a restored Qing-dynasty street complex dating to the 18th century. Hotels here suit travellers focused on heritage sightseeing and teahouse afternoons.

Wuhou District, south of the centre, clusters around the Wu Hou Shrine and Jinli Ancient Street — a strong base for evening dining on Jiuyan Bridge. The Chengdu Research Base of Giant Panda Breeding, 10 km north in Chenghua District, is reachable via Metro Line 3.

Getting Around

Chengdu Metro operates nine lines connecting hotel districts to major sights. Taxis and DiDi ride-hailing cover gaps efficiently. Shuangliu International Airport (CTU) is 16 km southwest of the centre; Tianfu International Airport (TFU), opened in 2021, is 51 km south — allow 60–80 minutes by airport shuttle.

Practical Tips

  • Food: Sichuan hot pot and mapo tofu concentrate around Jiuyan Bridge and the Yulin neighbourhood.
  • Weather: Chengdu's basin climate produces overcast skies year-round; pack a light layer even in summer.
  • Language: English signage is limited outside major hotels — install an offline translation app before arrival.
  • Day trips: Dujiangyan Irrigation System (57 km northwest, UNESCO listed in 2000) and Mount Qingcheng (65 km west) are under 40 minutes by high-speed rail from Chengdu East station.
