About Xi'an
Xi'an: Where the Silk Road Began
Xi'an, the capital of Shaanxi Province, served as China's imperial capital for 13 dynasties spanning over 1,100 years. The city is anchored by the Terracotta Army — discovered in 1974, 35 km east of the city centre — a burial complex protecting the tomb of Emperor Qin Shi Huang, who unified China in 221 BCE. The Ming-era City Wall, completed in 1384, still encircles the old town in a 13.7 km loop and remains one of the best-preserved city walls in China.
Where to Stay
Most hotels concentrate near the Bell Tower at the geographic centre of the walled city, or along Yan'ta Road south toward the Big Wild Goose Pagoda (652 CE). The Muslim Quarter around Beiyuanmen Street draws food-focused travelers to its lamb skewers and biangbiang noodle stalls. Business travelers often prefer the High-Tech Zone south of the Second Ring Road, where modern tower hotels cluster near tech campuses.
