About Pingyao

Pingyao: Ming-Dynasty Walls and Shanxi Merchant Legacy

Pingyao sits in central Shanxi Province, roughly 90 km south of Taiyuan, enclosed by one of China's best-preserved city walls — a 6.4 km perimeter built in 1370 during the Ming Dynasty. The UNESCO World Heritage listing came in 1997, recognising the intact street grid, courtyard residences, and 3,797 registered ancient buildings that survived the 20th century largely undisturbed. The old town measures just 2.25 sq km, making it walkable in a single afternoon.

Where to Stay and What Draws Visitors

Most hotels occupy converted qiao yuan (courtyard compounds) along Nan Dajie and the lanes branching off Ming Qing Jie, the commercial spine of the old city. Visitors arrive primarily to trace the history of Rishengchang Exchange Shop, founded in 1823 and considered China's first draft-bank (piaohao). The Pingyao Ancient City Scenic Area ticket (currently ¥130) covers 20 sites including the County Magistrate's Office and the twin temple complexes of Zhengguo Temple and Shuanglin Temple, the latter housing 2,052 painted clay sculptures dating to the Northern Wei period.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: High-speed trains from Taiyuan take around 30 minutes; the old city entrance is a 10-minute walk from Pingyao Ancient City Railway Station.
  • Best season: April–June and September–October; July–August brings heavy crowds and summer heat above 35 °C.
  • Cash: Many courtyard guesthouses outside the main strip prefer WeChat Pay or Alipay over international cards.
