Opposite the walled lane that once carried silver ingots between Pingyao's draft banks, Shanxi Merchant Mansion on Xiguojia Lane preserves the courtyard layout of a prosperous Qing-dynasty trading family. The compound's timber latticework and bracketed eaves remain unaltered, setting it apart from Pingyao's more heavily renovated guesthouses.

Rooms open onto interconnected siheyuan courtyards; winterized versions include heated kang beds, a feature few old-town properties still maintain. Breakfast draws on Shanxi staples — knife-cut noodles and millet porridge — rather than a buffet spread.

Pingyao's Ming city wall is a four-minute walk north; the Rishengchang Exchange House museum, credited as China's first draft bank, stands ten minutes east along South Street.
