About El Portón de Salento
Forty minutes by jeep from Armenia's airport, El Portón de Salento anchors the colonial grid of one of Colombia's best-preserved coffee-region towns, where the main calle rises steeply to a mirador above the Cocora Valley.
The three-star property takes its name from the wide timber portón typical of Quindío farmstead architecture, a regional detail that sets the tone for the building's vernacular style. Thick bahareque walls hold warmth through cool Andean evenings at 1,895 metres elevation.
Salento's central plaza — lined with brightly painted balconies and trout restaurants — is walkable from the entrance. Jeep collectives to Valle de Cocora, home to Colombia's national tree the wax palm, depart from the square each morning.
