About Aitutaki
Aitutaki: Coral Atoll of the South Pacific
Aitutaki sits 220 km north of Rarotonga in the Cook Islands, a self-governing nation in free association with New Zealand. The atoll's triangular lagoon — roughly 15 km across — shelters a mosaic of coral heads, sandbars, and One Foot Island (Tapuaetai), a motus accessible only by boat. The lagoon's pale turquoise water owes its colour to shallow depths over white coral sand, rarely exceeding 10 metres. The main village, Arutanga, lines the western shore and holds the island's oldest church, built by London Missionary Society pastors in 1828.
Who Visits and Why
Aitutaki draws snorkellers, divers, and travellers seeking low-density reef access. Half-day lagoon cruises depart Arutanga daily, stopping at multiple motus for snorkelling with giant trevally and reef sharks. Birdwatchers target the Aitutaki reed warbler, found nowhere else on earth. Accommodation is intentionally small-scale — no large resort chains operate here — with guesthouses and boutique lodges concentrated near Ootu Beach on the eastern peninsula.

- Weather: The dry season runs May–October, with trade winds keeping temperatures around 26 °C.
