About Rarotonga
Rarotonga: Volcanic Peaks, Reef Lagoons, and the South Pacific's Smallest Capital
Rarotonga is the largest of the Cook Islands, a self-governing nation in free association with New Zealand, sitting roughly 3,000 km northeast of Auckland. The island measures just 32 km in circumference, yet the interior rises sharply to Te Manga at 653 metres — a ridge of volcanic basalt that splits trade winds and feeds waterfalls into the coastal plain below. Avarua, on the north shore, serves as the national capital and the commercial centre; the Muri Beach area on the southeast coast holds the densest cluster of accommodation, facing a sheltered lagoon studded with four small motu islets.
Where to Stay in Rarotonga
Most hotels, guesthouses, and self-catering bungalows line Ara Tapu, the sealed road that circles the entire island. Properties near Muri Lagoon attract snorkellers and paddlers; those on the northwest near Black Rock offer calmer beaches at sunset. Budget travellers use backpacker lodges in Avarua, within walking distance of the Punanga Nui Market, open every Saturday morning for local produce and crafts.

- Currency: New Zealand Dollar (NZD) is standard; some resorts accept AUD.
- Entry: Most nationalities receive a 31-day visa on arrival; onward ticket required.
- Season: May to October brings drier weather; cyclone risk rises December through March.
