Most visitors stay four to six nights; the nearest airport is Juan Santamaría in San José, roughly four hours by bus or shuttle.

Cahuita, 17 km northwest, offers a quieter alternative with Cahuita National Park's coral reef snorkeling directly from the beach. Manzanillo, 13 km south along Route 36, sits at the edge of the Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge and suits travelers focused on dolphin watching and hiking.

Getting Around

Local buses run the Route 36 coastal road between Cahuita and Manzanillo roughly every two hours. Renting a bicycle is practical for reaching Playa Cocles and Playa Chiquita (4–6 km from town). Taxis are metered and widely available for the airport shuttle to Limón's Tobías Bolaños airstrip, a 45-minute ride.

• Currency: carry colones for sodas and bus fares; many small vendors do not accept cards.
