About Paphos

Paphos: Aphrodite's Coast and Roman Mosaic Capital

Paphos sits on Cyprus's southwest coast, 148 km from Nicosia, and holds UNESCO World Heritage status for its Roman mosaic floors at the Paphos Archaeological Park. The park, near the harbour, contains the Houses of Dionysus, Theseus, and Aion — mosaic complexes dating from the 2nd to 5th centuries AD. Two kilometres south, the Rock of Aphrodite (Petra tou Romiou) marks the mythological birthplace of the goddess and draws visitors year-round.

Paphos divides into two distinct zones: Kato Paphos (Lower Paphos), the tourist strip fronting the medieval harbour and castle, and Ktima (Upper Paphos), the working municipal centre with the Byzantine Museum and covered market. Most hotels concentrate in Kato Paphos within walking distance of the waterfront tavernas on Poseidonos Avenue.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Paphos International Airport (PFO) is 15 km east of the harbour; taxis take about 20 minutes.
  • Best months: April–June and September–October offer temperatures around 25–28 °C with smaller crowds than July–August.
  • Currency: Euro (EUR); ATMs line the harbour promenade.
  • Day trips: Troodos Mountains begin roughly 50 km northeast — allow 90 minutes by car.
