About Copenhagen Centre

Copenhagen Centre: Canal Fronts, Royal Palaces, and a Medieval Street Grid

Copenhagen Centre sits on the eastern shore of Zealand island, where Strøget — one of Europe's longest pedestrian shopping streets at 1.1 km — connects Rådhuspladsen to Kongens Nytorv. The medieval street plan survives largely intact around Gammeltorv, dating to the 12th century. Nyhavn, the 17th-century canal district with coloured merchant townhouses, anchors the waterfront. Christiansborg Palace on the islet of Slotsholmen houses the Danish Parliament, the Supreme Court, and the Royal Reception Rooms — all within a 10-minute walk of most central hotels.

Where to Stay

Hotels cluster in three pockets: around Tivoli Gardens (opened 1843) near Central Station, along Bredgade toward the Marble Church, and on the eastern edge near Nyhavn. The Metro City Ring (opened 2019) links Rådhuspladsen, Kongens Nytorv, and Østerport with minimal walking. Copenhagen Airport (CPH) sits 8 km southeast; the direct metro runs every 4–6 minutes and reaches Central Station in under 15 minutes.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around: The Rejsekort contactless travel card covers metro, bus, and S-tog across the city.
  • Weather: Pack a waterproof layer year-round; July averages 20 °C, January 2 °C.
  • Currency: Denmark uses the Danish krone (DKK), not the euro.
  • Cycling: Hire a city bike at any of the 300+ Bycyklen docking stations to reach Rosenborg Castle or the Lakes in under 10 minutes.
