About Copenhagen
Copenhagen: Harbour City Between the Øresund and the Canals
Copenhagen sits on the eastern edge of Zealand, facing Malmö, Sweden across the 16-km Øresund Strait. The Danish capital traces its origins to a 12th-century harbour fortified by Bishop Absalon in 1167, and today 794,000 people live within the municipality. The Strøget pedestrian axis runs 1.1 km through the medieval core, linking Rådhuspladsen to Kongens Nytorv, while Nyhavn — the 17th-century canal lined with coloured townhouses — anchors most visitor itineraries within walking distance of the centre.
Where to Stay
Hotels cluster in three zones. Indre By (the Inner City) places guests within 10 minutes of Rosenborg Castle and the Latin Quarter. Vesterbro, west of Central Station, converted its meatpacking district into a hotel and restaurant corridor after 2010. Frederiksberg, technically a separate municipality but surrounded by Copenhagen, offers quieter streets and direct Metro access to the airport via the M1/M2 lines.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: The Metro runs 24 hours on weekends; a 24-hour City Pass covers all zones including the airport.
- Best season: May–August brings long daylight hours; December draws visitors for the Tivoli Christmas market, open since 1843.
- Currency: Danish krone (DKK); most venues accept cards, but ATMs are widely available near Nørreport station.
- Airport transfer: Copenhagen Airport (CPH) at Kastrup is 13 km from the city centre; the Metro M2 reaches Central Station in 15 minutes.
