About Mindo

Mindo: Cloud Forest Gateway in Northwest Ecuador

Mindo sits at 1,250 metres elevation in the western Andes foothills of Pichincha Province, roughly 78 km northwest of Quito. The surrounding Mindo-Nambillo Protected Forest covers over 19,000 hectares of cloud forest and ranks among the world's top birding destinations, with more than 500 recorded species including the Cock-of-the-Rock and numerous hummingbird varieties. Butterfly farms along Avenida Quito display 25+ local species, and the Nambillo River feeds a network of waterfalls accessible by tarabita (cable car) and forest trail.

Where to Stay

Accommodation in Mindo concentrates along the main road and on forested hillside properties within 2 km of the central plaza. Eco-lodges with private garden cabins are the dominant format. Most properties sit within a 10-minute walk of the butterfly farms and chocolate workshops on Calle Sucre.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Cooperativa Flor del Valle buses depart from Ofelia terminal in Quito; journey takes approximately 2.5 hours.
  • Best season: December through May brings higher rainfall but denser cloud forest; June through September offers drier skies for birding.
  • Gear: Pack waterproof footwear — trails to Nambillo waterfalls involve river crossings.
  • Altitude: At 1,250 m, Mindo is lower than Quito — acclimatisation is not a concern for most visitors.
