About Aswan
Aswan: Egypt's Southern Gateway at the First Cataract
Aswan sits 879 km south of Cairo on the east bank of the Nile, where the river narrows at the First Cataract. The city has anchored Nile trade since pharaonic times — Elephantine Island, a short ferry ride offshore, holds Egypt's oldest surviving Nilometer. The Aswan High Dam, completed in 1971, created Lake Nasser and forced relocation of the Philae Temple complex to Agilkia Island, reached today by motorboat from Shellal dock, roughly 8 km south of the city center.
Where to Stay in Aswan
Hotels line the Corniche el-Nil, the riverside promenade running north from the train station, where Nile-facing rooms look directly across to Elephantine Island and the west-bank dunes. Budget guesthouses cluster around Sharia el-Souq, the covered spice and textile market. The Old Cataract Hotel, opened in 1899 on a sandstone bluff south of the center, hosted Agatha Christie during her 1933 stay and remains a reference point for the city's upper-end accommodation.
Practical Tips

- Best season: November through February — summer temperatures regularly exceed 42 °C.
- Getting around: Feluccas and motor ferries connect to Elephantine Island; taxis cover the High Dam and Philae in under 30 minutes.
