About El Tunco
El Tunco: Pacific Surf Village on El Salvador's Litoral Highway
El Tunco sits on El Salvador's Pacific coast, roughly 43 km southwest of San Salvador along the CA-2 Litoral Highway. The village takes its name from a pig-shaped volcanic rock — tunco means pig in local slang — visible just offshore. A reef break at the river mouth produces consistent left-hand waves, drawing surfers from Central America and beyond year-round. The dry season runs November through April, when offshore winds clean up the break at dawn.
Where to Stay
Accommodations cluster along two short unpaved streets between the highway and the black-sand beach. Budget hostels with hammock terraces sit steps from Playa El Tunco itself, while a handful of small boutique properties occupy the quieter stretch toward Playa El Sunzal, 1 km northeast, which offers a longer right-hand point break suited to intermediate riders. Most properties include surfboard storage.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Buses from San Salvador's Terminal del Sur (Route 192) reach Playa El Tunco in about 1.5 hours.
- Currency: El Salvador uses the US dollar; ATMs are scarce in the village — carry cash from the capital.
- Water safety: Rip currents form near the rock; check conditions with local instructors before paddling out.
- Best surf season: November–April for cleaner swells; May–October brings larger, choppier waves.
