About San Salvador

San Salvador: Capital at the Foot of a Volcano

San Salvador, capital of El Salvador since 1839, sits at 658 metres elevation in the Valley of the Hammocks, directly west of the Santa Ana volcano chain. The city's geography shapes daily life — the Quetzaltepec (San Salvador) volcano rises 1,893 metres just 8 km northwest of the historic centre, and the surrounding peaks are visible from most rooftops on clear mornings. The historic Plaza Barrios and the Catedral Metropolitana, rebuilt after the 1986 earthquake, anchor the colonial grid of the centro histórico.

Where to Stay

Most hotels concentrate in three zones: Colonia Escalón, a residential district of embassies and mid-range hotels roughly 4 km west of the centre; San Benito, home to higher-category properties near the Zona Rosa restaurant strip; and the Bulevar de los Héroes corridor favoured by budget travellers. Visitors arriving on business or en route to beach towns like El Tunco (49 km southwest) use San Salvador as a transit base. The Comalapa International Airport sits 44 km south of the city centre.

Practical Tips

  • Getting around: Use authorised taxis or app-based rides (Uber operates here); street taxis lack meters.
  • Currency: The US dollar has been legal tender since 2001; Bitcoin is also legal but rarely required.
  • Safety: Stay within Escalón, San Benito, and Santa Elena districts after dark.
  • Climate: The dry season runs November through April — the cooler months for walking the city.
