About Ammerschwihr

Ammerschwihr: Alsatian Wine Village on the Route des Vins

Ammerschwihr sits on the Alsace Wine Route (Route des Vins d'Alsace), roughly 5 km north of Colmar in the Haut-Rhin department. The village is best known for Kaefferkopf, a grand cru vineyard classified in 2007 — one of 51 Alsace grands crus — producing Gewurztraminer and Riesling on granite and gneiss soils. Much of the medieval village was destroyed in December 1944 during the Battle of Alsace; the reconstructed Tour des Bourgeois and the Porte Haute gate are the main surviving historic structures.

Where to Stay

Hotels in Ammerschwihr are small-scale, typically family-run properties or wine-estate guesthouses. Staying here puts visitors within cycling distance of Kaysersberg (3 km south) — birthplace of Albert Schweitzer — and a short drive from Riquewihr and Ribeauvillé. The village suits travelers focused on vineyard walks and Alsatian cuisine rather than urban amenities.

Practical Tips

  • Getting here: Train to Colmar, then taxi or bicycle; no direct rail stop in Ammerschwihr.
  • Best season: Harvest (September–October) for wine events; December for proximity to Colmar's Christmas market.
  • Currency: Euro. Most small properties accept cards but carry cash for cellar-door purchases.
