About Turckheim

Turckheim: Medieval Ramparts on the Alsatian Wine Route

Turckheim is a fortified medieval town in Haut-Rhin, Alsace, roughly 5 km west of Colmar along the Route des Vins d'Alsace. Three original gates — Porte de France, Porte de Munster, and Porte de Brand — still stand within intact 14th-century ramparts, making the old town one of the better-preserved walled circuits in the region. The Grand Cru Brand vineyard, classified in 1983, rises directly behind the town and produces Riesling, Gewurztraminer, and Pinot Gris prized by Alsatian winemakers.

Where to Stay

Hotels in Turckheim sit within or just outside the walls, giving guests walking access to the half-timbered Place Turenne and the weekly wine-cellar visits offered by local domaines. The town also functions as a quieter base for day trips to Colmar's Unterlinden Museum (home to the Isenheim Altarpiece, c. 1512) and the Château du Haut-Kœnigsbourg, 30 km north.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Turckheim has a train stop on the Colmar–Munster line; journey time from Colmar is under 10 minutes.
  • Best season: Late September through October for the vendanges (grape harvest); summer evenings feature a ceremonial night watchman's tour of the ramparts.
  • Packing: Carry a layer for vineyard walks, where elevation brings cooler air even in August.
