About Beaumontois en Périgord
Beaumontois en Périgord
Beaumontois en Périgord sits in the Périgord Pourpre — the southernmost quarter of the Dordogne department — where limestone plateaus drop into wooded river valleys. The commune formed in 2016 by merging several rural villages around the medieval bastide of Beaumont-du-Périgord, itself founded in 1272 by the English seneschal of Gascony, Lucas de Thaney. That origin is still legible in the town's grid street plan, cornières arcades around the central square, and the fortified church of Saint-Front-et-Saint-Georges, one of the best-preserved Plantagenet Gothic churches in southwest France.
Visitors arrive for the bastide architecture, regional gastronomy — black Périgord truffles, duck confit, walnut oil — and access to the wider Dordogne itinerary. Château de Biron, a fortress spanning ten centuries of construction, stands roughly 12 kilometres south. The Dropt river cuts through the commune, feeding quiet mill trails popular with cyclists on the Véloroute du Périgord. Most travellers use Bergerac Airport, about 30 kilometres northwest, or Agen, roughly 60 kilometres south.
Accommodation in the commune skews toward chambres d'hôtes, small logis hotels, and rural gîtes rather than chain properties. The market in Beaumont-du-Périgord runs on Thursdays and is one of the oldest weekly markets in the Dordogne.
