About Courchevel
Courchevel: Ski Resort Capital of the Trois Vallées
Courchevel sits at 1,850 m elevation in the Savoie department of the French Alps, roughly 100 km south-east of Geneva. Part of the Trois Vallées — the world's largest linked ski area with 600 km of marked runs — Courchevel divides into five villages: Courchevel 1850, 1650 (Moriond), 1550, Le Praz (1300), and Saint-Bon. The resort opened in 1946 as France's first purpose-built ski station, designed by architect Laurent Chappis on a grid of slope-side access roads. Winters draw competitive skiers for the Altiport piste — one of the steepest race-finish gradients in Europe — and high-altitude snow reliable from December to April.
Where to Stay in Courchevel
Hotels concentrate around Courchevel 1850, where ski-in/ski-out access to the Bellecôte and Croisette lift hubs places guests steps from the Jardin Alpin nursery slopes. Le Praz offers quieter, lower-cost alternatives with the Olympic ski-jump stadium visible from most terraces. The 1650 (Moriond) village balances mid-range accommodation with direct gondola links into the main circuit.
Practical Tips
- Altitude: Courchevel 1850 sits above the temperature inversion cloud that affects lower valley towns; pack UV-protection eyewear.
- Access: The nearest TGV station is Moûtiers-Salins-Bourg-Saint-Maurice, 25 km downhill; shuttle buses run every 30–60 minutes in ski season.
- Season: Peak weeks (February school holidays) book out 6–12 months ahead; late-March slots offer longer daylight and softer snow.
- Currency: All hotels and most ski-hire shops accept cards; ATMs are available in Courchevel 1850 village centre.
