Gordes: Hilltop Stone Village in the Luberon

Gordes perches on a limestone ridge in the Luberon, Provence, roughly 30 km east of Avignon. The village's tiered Renaissance houses — built from pale golden stone — rise steeply around a 16th-century château that now houses the Musée Pol Mara. Lavender fields spread across the Plateau de Vaucluse to the north, peaking in bloom between late June and mid-July. The Village des Bories, a cluster of dry-stone shepherd huts dated to the Bronze Age and used into the 19th century, sits 2 km south of the village centre.

Accommodation concentrates in two zones: within the old village itself, where converted bastides and chambres d'hôtes occupy narrow medieval lanes, and along the D15 corridor descending toward Gordes-les-Imberts, where larger mas-style hotels sit amid olive groves. Properties fill weeks in advance during July–August lavender season and the Les Rencontres de la Photographie period in nearby Arles.

• Car hire: Rent from Avignon — roads into the village are narrow and parking fills by 9 a.m. in summer.
