About Issigeac

Issigeac: Fortified Medieval Village

Issigeac is a fortified medieval village in the Périgord Pourpre region of the Dordogne, roughly 20 km southeast of Bergerac. Its circular street plan follows the original 13th-century layout — a rare case of near-complete preservation in southwestern France. The Bishop's Palace, built in the early 18th century for the bishops of Sarlat, anchors the central square and doubles today as the village hall. The Gothic church of Saint-Félicien, dating to the 15th and 16th centuries, rises above the low rooftops and remains in active use.

Most visitors arrive for the Sunday morning market, one of the most attended weekly markets in the Dordogne, drawing producers of foie gras, walnuts, strawberries, and Bergerac AOC wines from the surrounding countryside. The village sits within the Bergerac wine appellation, and several domaines operate within a short drive. Walkers use Issigeac as a base for routes through the Dropt river valley — the GR 636 long-distance trail passes through the commune.

Accommodation in and around Issigeac runs to chambres d'hôtes, small hotels in converted farmhouses, and a handful of gîtes. The nearest train station is Bergerac, served by direct TER services from Bordeaux Saint-Jean in approximately one hour.
