Le Bois-Plage-en-Ré sits on the Île de Ré, a 30-kilometre Atlantic island connected to La Rochelle by the Viaduc de Ré — a toll bridge opened in 1988. The commune anchors the island's southern coast, where pine forests meet wide sand beaches and salt marshes stretch inland. Vineyards producing Pineau des Charentes and AOC Île de Ré wines cross the flatlands between the village and the shore. The old port quarter retains whitewashed houses with blue-shuttered facades, typical of Charentais island architecture, alongside small market stalls selling fleur de sel harvested a few kilometres north near Loix.
Visitors come for the beaches — Plage de la Rivière and Plage des Gollandières draw families and surfers between June and September — and for the island's 100-kilometre cycling network, one of the densest in France. Birdwatchers target the marshes around Lilleau des Niges nature reserve, a Ramsar-listed wetland on the island's northern tip less than 20 kilometres away. The village itself hosts a covered market on Tuesday and Friday mornings in July and August.
La Rochelle, the nearest city, lies roughly 27 kilometres east across the bridge. The toll for a standard car is set per crossing; seasonal rates apply in summer. Most hotels and rental properties on the island book out by April for July and August, making early reservation essential for peak-season stays.
