About La Flotte
La Flotte
La Flotte sits on the northeast coast of Île de Ré, an Atlantic island connected to La Rochelle by a 3-kilometre toll bridge completed in 1988. The village holds the label Plus Beau Village de France — one of fewer than 170 communes to earn it — and its 17th-century fortified harbour gives the seafront a distinct military geometry shaped by Vauban-era engineering.
Most visitors arrive between June and September for cycling on the island's flat 110-kilometre network of dedicated lanes, salt-marsh walking, and oyster tasting at the harbour stalls. The ruined Cistercian Abbaye des Châteliers, founded in the 12th century and gutted during the Wars of Religion, stands just south of the village and draws visitors year-round. The covered market on the central square operates daily in summer, with local fleur de sel, Pineau des Charentes, and Ré potato — an AOC product since 1997 — as the signature purchases.
Île de Ré is a car-restricted destination during peak season; the bridge toll in summer 2024 reached €27 per vehicle. Most accommodation clusters within walking distance of the harbour, making a central location practical. La Rochelle's train station is roughly 35 kilometres from La Flotte via the bridge.
