La Rochelle sits on France's Atlantic coast in the Charente-Maritime department, roughly 470 km southwest of Paris. The city is defined by its medieval harbour — guarded by three limestone towers built between the 13th and 15th centuries — and by one of the longest covered arcaded streets in France. The old port remains the geographic and social centre: fishing boats, sailing yachts, and ferry services to the Île de Ré share the same sheltered basin.
