Limoges sits in the Haute-Vienne department of central France, roughly 380 km south of Paris and 100 km northeast of Périgueux. The city built its international reputation on two industries: porcelain and enamel work. Production of Limoges porcelain began in earnest after kaolin deposits were found nearby in 1768, and the craft still defines the city's identity — the Musée National Adrien Dubouché holds over 12,000 pieces tracing ceramic history from antiquity to the present day.

Visitors arrive for several distinct reasons. Art and design travelers come for the porcelain museums and the medieval enamel collections at the Musée de l'Évêché, housed in an 18th-century bishop's palace beside the Vienne river. History-focused travelers explore the Gothic Cathédrale Saint-Étienne, begun in 1273 and notable for its ornate rood screen. The city also draws rugby fans — Stade Aurélien-Taofifenua is home to one of France's most decorated clubs, ST Limoges. A well-preserved medieval quarter called the Cité clusters around the cathedral on a granite promontory above the river.

Limoges–Bellegarde Airport operates scheduled flights to Paris-Orly, London Stansted, and several other European cities. The city center is compact and walkable; the main train station, Gare de Limoges-Bénédictins — itself a listed Art Deco landmark built in 1929 — connects to Paris Austerlitz in roughly three hours by direct train.
