Limoges: Porcelain Capital of the Massif Central

Limoges, the prefecture of Haute-Vienne in south-central France, built its international reputation on two crafts: porcelain and enamel. The city's kaolin deposits, discovered near Saint-Yrieix-la-Perche in 1768, fueled a porcelain industry that supplied European courts for over two centuries. The Musée National Adrien Dubouché, housing more than 12,000 ceramic pieces, remains the largest ceramics collection in France. The medieval Cathédrale Saint-Étienne, begun in 1273 and completed over four centuries, anchors the old quarter with its Gothic nave stretching 94 metres.
