About Médan
Médan: Zola's Village on the Seine
Médan is a small commune in the Yvelines département, Île-de-France, situated on the right bank of the Seine roughly 35 km northwest of Paris. The village is inseparable from Émile Zola, who purchased a house here in 1878 and expanded it into a substantial property where he wrote several volumes of the Rougon-Macquart cycle. The Château de Médan attracted fellow Naturalist writers — Maupassant, Huysmans, Céard — whose 1880 anthology Les Soirées de Médan took its name from this address.
Where to Stay
Accommodation in Médan itself is limited; most visitors base themselves in Poissy (4 km east) or Villennes-sur-Seine (2 km north), both with direct RER A or Transilien L rail links to Paris Saint-Lazare in under 40 minutes. The surrounding Seine valley offers chambres d'hôtes and small hotels suited to literary tourists and cyclists following the Avenue Verte greenway.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Transilien line L from Paris Saint-Lazare to Villennes-sur-Seine station, then 2 km on foot or by bike.
- Château de Médan: Check seasonal opening hours before visiting — the property is managed by the Société littéraire des amis d'Émile Zola.
- Cycling: The Seine riverbank path connects Médan to Poissy and Mantes-la-Jolie without major climbs.
