Megève sits at 1,113 m in the French Alps, 30 km east of Geneva, in the Haute-Savoie department. The Rothschild family developed it as a resort in the 1920s — a deliberate alternative to St. Moritz — and that origin shaped everything: wide pedestrian streets, a medieval church at the village core, and architecture that favors stone and timber over concrete. Three ski areas — Mont d'Arbois, Rochebrune, and Le Jaillet — connect to give skiers roughly 445 km of marked runs across the Évasion Mont Blanc domain.

Visitors split between winter skiers and summer hikers. The winter season runs December through April, with January and February seeing the highest snowfall. In summer, the same lifts carry mountain bikers and walkers to trails above 2,000 m, with direct sightlines to Mont Blanc, 40 km to the southeast. The town holds a strong culinary reputation — several restaurants carry Michelin recognition — and a weekly market operates year-round on Place du Marché.

Megève's central train connection is Sallanches, 12 km away, served by TGV from Paris Gare de Lyon in roughly 3 hours 30 minutes. Geneva Airport is the most common international entry point, about 60 km by road. The village itself is compact and largely car-free in the center; a free shuttle circulates between car parks and the main square during peak season.
