Saint-Gervais-les-Bains sits at 820 metres elevation in the Haute-Savoie department of the French Alps, roughly 25 km northeast of Chamonix. The town straddles two distinct zones: the thermal spa village in the valley and the high-altitude ski area of Saint-Gervais Mont-Blanc, which connects directly to the Évasion Mont-Blanc ski domain — one of the largest in the Alps with over 445 km of marked runs. The Mont Blanc Tramway, France's highest rack railway, departs from here and climbs to the Nid d'Aigle station at 2,372 metres, offering direct views of the Bionnassay glacier.

Visitors split between winter skiers and summer alpinists. The ski season typically runs December through April, drawing families and intermediate skiers who prefer quieter slopes than neighbouring Chamonix. In summer, the town serves as a base for climbers tackling Mont Blanc via the Goûter route — the most frequently used ascent on the mountain.
