About Les Houches
Les Houches
Les Houches sits at 1,008 m elevation at the western gateway to the Chamonix Valley, directly beneath the Mont Blanc massif in Haute-Savoie. The village commands views across to the Aiguilles Rouges range and shares the valley with Chamonix, roughly 6 km to the northeast. Its ski area — served by the Bellevue gondola and Prarion cable car — tops out at 1,900 m and hosts the annual Kandahar FIS World Cup downhill race on the demanding Verte piste, a fixture on the racing calendar since 1962.
Winter draws competitive skiers and families alike; the runs are graded more accessible than Chamonix's high-altitude terrain, making Les Houches a practical base for mixed-ability groups. Summer transforms the slopes into a network of hiking and mountain-bike trails connecting to the Tour du Mont Blanc long-distance route, which passes through the village. The Aiguille du Midi cable car in Chamonix is reachable in under 15 minutes by car or Mont Blanc Express train, giving Les Houches guests full access to the wider massif without Chamonix town-centre prices.
The Mont Blanc Express rack railway stops at Les Houches station, linking the village to Saint-Gervais-les-Bains to the west and Chamonix to the east without a car. Most hotels and chalets concentrate along the Route du Bouchet and near the Prarion lift base.
