About Les Contamines-Montjoie
Les Contamines-Montjoie
Les Contamines-Montjoie sits at 1,164 m in the Montjoie Valley, Haute-Savoie, roughly 25 km south of Chamonix at the foot of Mont Blanc's southern flanks. The village has retained its traditional Savoyard character — stone chalets, a 17th-century baroque church (Notre-Dame de la Gorge), and narrow lanes that predate the ski era. The ski domain reaches 2,487 m at the Signal summit and links with Saint-Gervais to form the Évasion Mont Blanc area, totalling around 445 km of marked runs across the two resorts.
Winter draws alpine skiers and snowboarders seeking uncrowded slopes relative to Chamonix or Megève. Summer attracts hikers on the Tour du Mont Blanc — the GR TMB passes through the valley — and trail runners targeting the Ultra-Trail du Mont Blanc circuit. The Notre-Dame de la Gorge pilgrimage site, 6 km up the valley road from the village center, marks the start of a Roman mule path still used for mountain access.
The village has no motorway exit; access is via the D902 from Saint-Gervais-les-Bains, which is served by Mont Blanc Express train from Saint-Gervais–Le Fayet station. Most accommodation clusters around the main avenue and the Plateau du Lay mid-mountain zone at 1,450 m.
