Perpignan sits at the foot of the Pyrenees in southern France, 30 km from the Spanish border and 15 km from the Mediterranean coast. The city served as the capital of the Kingdom of Majorca from 1276 to 1344, and that history is still visible in the fortified Palace of the Kings of Majorca — a 13th-century royal complex that dominates the upper town. The medieval quarter around Le Castillet, a 14th-century brick gate-tower, forms the core of the old city. Catalan culture runs deep here: street signs appear in both French and Catalan, and the city's cuisine, festivals, and architecture reflect centuries of cross-border exchange.

Visitors come for the medieval heritage, the proximity to beaches along the Côte Vermeille, and access to the Pyrenees for hiking and skiing.
