Carcassonne sits in the Aude department of southern France, roughly 90 km southeast of Toulouse. The city is defined by its double-walled medieval citadel — La Cité — a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1997. The fortress dates to Visigoth construction in the 5th century, expanded under the Trencavel viscounts in the 12th century, and restored by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc between 1853 and 1879. The walls stretch nearly 3 km and enclose 52 towers, making it one of the largest medieval fortifications in Europe.

Visitors come primarily for the citadel, but the lower town — the Bastide Saint-Louis, built in 1262 — holds its own appeal. Its grid-plan streets contain the Gothic Église Saint-Michel and a covered market active since the 13th century. The Canal du Midi, a UNESCO-listed waterway completed in 1681, passes just south of the city and draws cyclists and barge travelers through the region. Summer brings the Festival de Carcassonne, running each July with open-air concerts inside the citadel walls.

Carcassonne receives around 3 million visitors per year, making it one of the most-visited sites in France. The TGV connects Carcassonne to Paris Gare de Lyon in approximately 4 hours 30 minutes. The local airport, Aéroport de Carcassonne, handles seasonal routes mainly from the UK and Ireland. July and August are the busiest months; spring and autumn offer cooler temperatures and shorter queues at the citadel entrance.
