About Carcassonne
Carcassonne: Medieval Citadel on the Aude
Carcassonne sits in the Aude département of southern France, 92 km southeast of Toulouse along the Canal du Midi. The city is defined by the Cité de Carcassonne, a double-walled hilltop fortress with 52 towers dating from Visigoth and medieval construction, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997. The restoration led by architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc between 1853 and 1879 returned the ramparts to a form close to their 13th-century appearance. Visitors cross the Pont Vieux or take the shuttle from the lower Ville Basse, the 13th-century planned town below the hill.
Where to Stay
Hotels concentrate in three zones: inside the Cité itself for the full medieval atmosphere, in the Ville Basse around Place Carnot for easier parking and lower rates, and along the Canal du Midi for leisure travellers on cycling itineraries. The Bastide Saint-Louis district in the Ville Basse has the widest restaurant and café choice after dark.
