Carcassonne: Medieval Citadel on the Aude

Carcassonne sits in the Aude département of southern France, 92 km southeast of Toulouse along the Canal du Midi. The city is defined by the Cité de Carcassonne, a double-walled hilltop fortress with 52 towers dating from Visigoth and medieval construction, inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1997.
