About Rouen
Rouen: Gothic Spires and a Medieval Street Grid
Rouen stands on the Seine River in Normandy, roughly 130 km northwest of Paris. The city preserves one of France's most intact medieval cores — Rue du Gros-Horloge, a pedestrianised lane anchored by a 14th-century astronomical clock, runs through the heart of the old town. The Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Rouen, completed over four centuries from 1145 to 1514, rises 151 m and was the world's tallest structure briefly in the 19th century. Claude Monet painted its façade more than 30 times between 1892 and 1894.
Where to Stay
Most hotels concentrate within walking distance of the cathedral and Place du Vieux-Marché, the square where Joan of Arc was burned at the stake in 1431. The Rive Droite (right bank) holds the bulk of 3- and 4-star properties, half-timbered buildings converted into boutique addresses along Rue Eau-de-Robec. Business travellers also use Rouen as a base for the Seine-Maritime industrial corridor.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Direct SNCF trains from Paris Saint-Lazare run every 30–60 minutes; journey time is approximately 1 hour 15 minutes.
- Getting around: The city's TCAR network includes a metro line (Line 1) connecting the train station to the city centre.
- Best timing: The Armada tall-ships festival, held every four to six years along the Seine quays, draws over 8 million visitors; next edition planned for 2028.
