About Rouffach
Rouffach: Alsatian Wine Town Below the Vosges
Rouffach sits 15 km south of Colmar in the Haut-Rhin department of Alsace, at the foot of the Vosges foothills. The town's medieval core preserves the Église Notre-Dame de l'Assomption, a Romanesque-Gothic church built between the 11th and 14th centuries, alongside a 15th-century Witches' Tower — one of the best-preserved fortified towers in southern Alsace. Half-timbered houses line the Place de la République, giving the town its characteristic Alsatian streetscape without the summer crowds of Colmar or Strasbourg.
Wine Routes and Nearby Stays
Rouffach anchors a productive stretch of the Route des Vins d'Alsace, with Pinot Gris and Riesling vineyards immediately above the town. The surrounding Grand Cru Zinnkoepflé hillside vineyard produces wines from a south-facing limestone slope at around 300 m elevation. Visitors arriving by rail use Rouffach station on the Mulhouse–Colmar line, with trains running roughly every hour.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: The town centre is walkable; a car or bicycle opens access to vineyard trails above town.
- Best season: Late September through October aligns with harvest season on the Zinnkoepflé slopes.
- Day trips: Colmar's Unterlinden Museum (home to the Isenheim Altarpiece) is 20 minutes north by train.
