Saint-Jean-de-Monts sits on the Vendée Atlantic coast in western France, roughly 60 km southwest of Nantes. The town's defining feature is its 14 km of fine sandy beach backed by pine forests planted in the 19th century to stabilise the dunes. The seafront promenade, Boulevard de l'Océan, stretches the full length of the resort and links the main commercial centre to the quieter southern end near Notre-Dame-de-Monts.

Hotels and holiday residences cluster along the promenade and within a short walk of the Les Demoiselles beach access. The town centre around Rue du Palais offers smaller hotels and apartments within cycling distance of the coast. A network of over 100 km of marked cycle paths — one of the largest cycling grids in France — connects the resort to the Marais Breton wetlands to the east.
