About Talloires-Montmin
Talloires-Montmin: Lake Annecy's Eastern Shore
Talloires-Montmin sits on the eastern bank of Lac d'Annecy in Haute-Savoie, roughly 13 km south of Annecy city. The commune merged in 2016, joining the lakeside village of Talloires with the highland hamlet of Montmin, which stands at around 1,000 m on the slopes above the lake. The result is a destination that spans Alpine meadows and one of Europe's clearest freshwater lakes within a few kilometres.
Talloires draws visitors seeking sailing, windsurfing, and open-water swimming on the lake, as well as hikers heading to the Col de la Forclaz — a paragliding launch point above Montmin with views across the water. The Abbaye de Talloires, a Benedictine monastery converted into a hotel in the 19th century, anchors the village historically; it hosted former U.S. President Ulysses S. Grant during his 1877 European tour.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Annecy-Haute-Savoie–Mont Blanc Airport handles regional flights; Geneva Airport (GVA) is 75 km north.
- Getting around: Boats connect Talloires to Annecy town in summer; a car is necessary for Montmin.
- Best season: July–August for lake activities; May–June for hiking with fewer crowds.
- Accommodation: Hotels concentrate in Talloires village, mostly 3–4-star lakeside properties.
