About Rangiroa

Rangiroa: French Polynesia's Largest Atoll

Rangiroa sits in the Tuamotu Archipelago, 300 km north of Papeete. The atoll's lagoon — roughly 79 km long and 34 km wide — ranks among the largest enclosed lagoons on earth. Two main villages, Avatoru and Tiputa, face each other across the northern rim, linked by a daily boat taxi. Air Tahiti operates the 1-hour flight from Papeete, with one to three departures daily depending on season.

Diving Tiputa Pass and the Blue Lagoon

Tiputa Pass is Rangiroa's signature dive site, where outgoing tides funnel dolphins, hammerhead sharks, and manta rays through a 300-metre channel. Avatoru Pass offers calmer entry-level drift dives. Snorkelers and day-trippers head to the Blue Lagoon, a shallow coral garden roughly 25 km west of Avatoru by motorboat. The Lagon de Sable Rose (Pink Sand Lagoon) lies further east — about a 90-minute boat ride from the main village strip.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Air Tahiti flies from Papeete in approximately 1 hour; no direct international flights serve Rangiroa.
  • Accommodation: Pensions and small guesthouses line the north rim road in Avatoru; larger pension-hotels cluster near the Tiputa ferry dock.
  • Currency: French Pacific Franc (XPF); one ATM operates in Avatoru.
  • Best dive season: May through October brings calmer seas and stronger dolphin activity at Tiputa Pass.
