About Tahiti
Tahiti: Volcanic Heart of French Polynesia
Tahiti is the largest island in French Polynesia, covering 1,045 sq km and home to Papeete, the territorial capital on the northwest coast. Two merged shield volcanoes — Mont Orohena (2,241 m, the highest point in French Polynesia) and Mont Marau — define the rugged interior, while a barrier reef ring shelters calm lagoons along the coast. Paul Gauguin arrived here in 1891 and made the island a permanent reference point in Western art history. The Musée Gauguin in the Papeari district preserves that context alongside Polynesian archaeology.
Where to Stay in Tahiti
Most hotels concentrate in Papeete and the adjacent commune of Faa'a, where the international airport sits 5 km west of the city centre. The Punaauia district, roughly 15 km south of Papeete along the west coast, offers quieter lagoon-facing properties with views toward Moorea, 17 km offshore. Budget guesthouses cluster near the Marché de Papeete, while larger 4-star properties line the coastal road between Faa'a and Punaauia.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Faa'a International Airport (PPT) handles direct flights from Los Angeles (roughly 8 hours) and Auckland (roughly 5 hours).
- Currency: CFP franc (XPF); cards accepted at most Papeete hotels but carry cash for markets.
- Ferry access: High-speed ferries to Moorea depart Papeete Ferry Terminal and take about 30 minutes.
- Climate: Wet season runs November–April; dry season May–October suits hiking on the interior trails.
