About Hannover

Hannover: Trade Fair Capital on the Leine River

Hannover, capital of Lower Saxony, sits on the Leine River roughly 250 km west of Berlin. The city hosts the Hannover Messe, the world's largest industrial trade fair, drawing over 130,000 visitors each April. The Deutsche Messe fairground covers 496,000 square metres — the largest exhibition complex on the planet by indoor space. Beyond trade, Hannover earned its place in royal history: the House of Hanover supplied Britain with monarchs from George I in 1714 through Queen Victoria.

Where to Stay in Hannover

Most hotels concentrate in the Mitte district, within walking distance of the Hauptbahnhof (central station) and the Kröpcke plaza. The Linden-Nord and Nordstadt neighbourhoods attract longer-stay visitors seeking quieter streets and local restaurants. For trade fair periods, Langenhagen — immediately north of the airport — offers overflow accommodation with direct S-Bahn line S5 access to the fairground in under 20 minutes.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Hannover Airport (HAJ) is 11 km north of the city centre; the S5 S-Bahn covers the route in 17 minutes.
  • Trade fair timing: Hotel rates during Hannover Messe (April) and CeBIT successor events can triple; book three months ahead.
  • Green spaces: The Eilenriede city forest, at 650 hectares, is one of Europe's largest urban forests and borders the eastern hotel district.
  • Currency: Euro (EUR); contactless payment widely accepted.
