About Hannoversch Münden

Hannoversch Münden: Where Three Rivers Converge

Hannoversch Münden sits at the confluence of the Werra and Fulda rivers, the exact point where both streams merge to create the Weser. Alexander von Humboldt cited it around 1800 as one of the seven most beautifully situated towns in the world — a claim locals still quote. The Altstadt preserves more than 700 half-timbered buildings from the 14th to 18th centuries, ranking it among the most intact medieval streetscapes in northern Germany. The town lies 20 km south of Göttingen in Lower Saxony, close to the Hesse border.

Where to Stay and Getting Around

Hotels and guesthouses concentrate near the Marktplatz and along the riverbanks between the Werrabrücke and the Tillyschanze viewpoint. Several properties occupy restored Fachwerk buildings within two minutes' walk of the 1605 Renaissance Rathaus. The long-distance Weser Cycle Route (R1) passes directly through the town, making it a popular overnight stop for cyclists from April through October.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: Regional trains on the Kassel–Göttingen corridor stop at Hann. Münden station, a 10-minute walk from the Altstadt.
  • Season: River boat tours on the Weser run May to September; the Christmas market fills the Marktplatz in late November and December.
  • Walking: The three-river confluence point (Dreiflussstelle) is a 5-minute walk south of the Marktplatz along the riverbank.
