About Frankfurt

Frankfurt: Finance Capital on the Main River

Frankfurt am Main, Germany's financial centre, pairs a skyline of glass towers with a restored medieval quarter around Römerberg square, rebuilt after World War II. The Commerzbank Tower (259 m) and Messeturm (256 m) form a skyline found nowhere else in Germany. The Städel Museum, founded in 1815, holds one of the country's largest art collections across seven centuries, positioned on the south bank of the Main.

Where to Stay

The Innenstadt places guests within walking distance of the Hauptbahnhof and the banking district. Sachsenhausen, directly south of the river, clusters apple-wine (Ebbelwoi) taverns along Schweizer Strasse and offers a quieter, residential base. The Westend hosts several 4-star hotels near Messe Frankfurt, which runs over 50 major trade fairs annually including the October Frankfurter Buchmesse.

Practical Tips

  • Airport transfer: S-Bahn lines S8 and S9 link Frankfurt Airport (FRA) to the Hauptbahnhof in 11 minutes.
  • Trade fair periods: Book 3–4 months ahead during Buchmesse (October) and Automechanika (September, even years).
  • Getting around: The U-Bahn and S-Bahn cover all major districts; a day pass costs around €7.
