About Würzburg
Würzburg: Baroque Residenz, Franconian Wine, and the Romantic Road
Würzburg sits on the Main River in northern Franconia, Bavaria, roughly 120 km east of Frankfurt. The city is anchored by the Würzburg Residenz, a UNESCO World Heritage palace completed in 1744 and designed by Balthasar Neumann — its grand staircase ceiling holds one of the largest fresco paintings in the world, executed by Giovanni Battista Tiepolo. Above the old town, the 13th-century Marienberg Fortress commands the west bank of the Main. Würzburg marks the northern starting point of the Romantische Straße (Romantic Road), a 460 km tourist route running south to Füssen.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster around the Hauptbahnhof (central station) and the pedestrian zone along Kaiserstraße. The Altstadt quarter keeps guests within walking distance of the Residenz gardens and the Alte Mainbrücke, a 15th-century stone bridge lined with twelve baroque saints' statues. The Sanderau neighborhood, south of the bridge, offers quieter guesthouses a short tram ride from the center.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: ICE trains connect Frankfurt am Main Hbf to Würzburg Hbf in about 65 minutes.
- Wine: Franconian wine is bottled in the distinctive flat Bocksbeutel flask; the Bürgerspital and Juliusspital hospital foundations operate wine cellars open for tastings.
- Timing: The Africa Festival held each June at the Main riverbanks draws around 100,000 visitors — book hotels several weeks ahead.
