About Nürnberg
Nürnberg: Medieval Walls, War Crimes Trials, and Franconian Brewing
Nürnberg, Bavaria's second-largest city, sits on the Pegnitz River roughly 170 km north of Munich. The Kaiserburg (Imperial Castle), rebuilt after World War II bombing, has anchored the Altstadt since the 11th century. Below the castle walls, half-timbered houses line the Handwerkerhof craft courtyard and the twin-towered Sebalduskirche (consecrated 1273) frames the northern quarter. The city produced Albrecht Dürer — his birthplace on Albrecht-Dürer-Straße is now a museum — and was once the de facto capital of the Holy Roman Empire.
Where to Stay in Nürnberg
Most hotels cluster within or just outside the Altstadt ring, giving walking access to the castle and the Hauptmarkt Christmas market (operating since 1628). The St. Lorenz district south of the Pegnitz suits visitors focused on the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, Germany's largest cultural history museum. The Gostenhof quarter west of the Altstadt draws a younger crowd with independent bars and galleries.
