About Heidelberg
Heidelberg: Castle Ruins, Baroque Old Town, and the Neckar River
Heidelberg sits where the Neckar River cuts through the forested hills of Baden-Württemberg, 78 km south of Frankfurt. The city is defined by Heidelberg Castle (Heidelberger Schloss), a red-sandstone ruin dating to the 13th century that rises 80 m above the Altstadt on the Königstuhl hillside. The castle's Great Barrel — built in 1751 and holding 221,726 litres — remains one of Europe's most visited curiosities. Below it, the Hauptstraße runs 1.6 km through the Baroque old town, one of Germany's longest pedestrian streets.
Where to Stay in Heidelberg
Most hotels cluster in the Altstadt and along Bismarckplatz, the main tram hub. The Neuenheim district, across the Old Bridge (Alte Brücke, 1788), offers quieter options within 10 minutes' walk of the old town. Bergheim, near the central station, suits business travelers and those arriving by rail — Frankfurt Airport is reachable in 50 minutes by direct train.
Practical Tips
- Getting around: Trams 21 and 22 connect the Hauptbahnhof to Bismarckplatz in 8 minutes; the castle funicular departs from Kornmarkt.
- Best months: May–October for open castle terraces; late November brings a well-attended Christmas market on Marktplatz.
- University context: Ruprecht-Karls-Universität (founded 1386, Germany's oldest) draws international academic visitors year-round, filling hotels during graduation weeks in July.
