About Koblenz

Koblenz: Where Two Rivers Meet

Koblenz sits at the confluence of the Rhine and Moselle rivers in Rhineland-Palatinate, Germany. Romans founded a fort here around 8 BC, naming the settlement Confluentes. That junction is marked today by the Deutsches Eck monument, erected in 1897 and rebuilt after World War II damage. The city of roughly 114,000 anchors the northern end of the Upper Middle Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage corridor running 65 km south to Rüdesheim.

Landmarks and Getting Around

The Ehrenbreitstein Fortress stands 118 m above the Rhine's east bank — one of the largest preserved fortresses in Europe. A cable car crosses the river from the Altstadt in approximately four minutes. Along the Rhine promenade, the Kurfürstliches Schloss (Electoral Palace), completed in 1786, served as a residence for French Emperor Napoleon during the occupation period. The Altstadt's pedestrian core places the central market square, Liebfrauenkirche, and river terraces within easy walking distance of each other.

Practical Tips

  • Rail access: Koblenz Hauptbahnhof links to Cologne in around 70 minutes and Frankfurt in roughly 90 minutes by fast regional rail.
  • Moselle wine route: The route into the Moselle Valley vineyards begins at the city's western edge — villages like Cochem lie 50 km upstream.
  • Cable car: Operates seasonally (typically April–October); check hours before planning a Ehrenbreitstein visit.
  • River cruises: Seasonal boat services depart from the Konrad-Adenauer-Ufer promenade along both the Rhine and Moselle.
