About Bonn
Bonn: Beethoven's Birthplace on the Rhine
Bonn sits on the west bank of the Rhine, 28 km south of Cologne in the North Rhine-Westphalia state of Germany. The city served as West Germany's federal capital from 1949 to 1990, a political legacy visible in the row of ministries along Adenauerallee and the glass-and-steel UN Campus that now occupies the former parliament district. Ludwig van Beethoven was born here in 1770; the Beethoven-Haus on Bonngasse draws music historians and casual visitors year-round, and the Beethovenfest festival fills concert halls every September.
Where to Stay
Hotels cluster in three zones: the Innenstadt around the pedestrian Münsterplatz, the Südstadt near the university botanical garden, and the Bad Godesberg suburb — a former diplomatic quarter 8 km south with quieter guesthouses. The Poppelsdorf neighborhood, anchored by the baroque Poppelsdorf Palace, offers mid-range hotels within a 15-minute walk of the central station.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Cologne Bonn Airport (CGN) is 15 km northeast; S-Bahn line S13 reaches Bonn Hauptbahnhof in about 30 minutes.
- Local transit: The Stadtbahn tram network covers the city; a day ticket costs around €9.
- Season: The Rheinaue park cherry blossoms peak in early April, drawing large weekend crowds — book hotels two to three weeks ahead.
