About Monschau
Monschau: Half-Timbered Town in the High Eifel
Monschau sits in a narrow valley carved by the Rur river in the High Eifel region of North Rhine-Westphalia, roughly 80 km south of Cologne and 20 km from the Belgian border. The town's slate-roofed, half-timbered houses date largely from the 17th and 18th centuries, when Monschau was a centre of the fine wool cloth trade. The Rotes Haus (Red House), built in 1756 by cloth merchant Johann Heinrich Scheibler, survives as a museum with its original Baroque interior intact. Narrow cobblestone lanes follow the river bends, and the 12th-century Monschau Castle overlooks the valley from the ridge above.
Where to Stay
Accommodation clusters along Laufenstraße and the Stadtmitte, within walking distance of the old town. Small guesthouses and family-run hotels occupy historic buildings; larger chain options require a drive to Aachen, 30 km north. Summer and the Christmas market (late November–December) fill rooms quickly.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Train to Aachen Hbf, then bus 66 (approx. 60 min total from Aachen).
- Parking: Leave vehicles at the Rur-Ufer car park; the old town centre is pedestrian-only.
- Season: Spring and autumn offer cooler hiking conditions on the Eifelsteig trail, which passes through town.
- Mustard: The Historic Mustard Mill on Laufenstraße, in operation since 1882, sells stone-ground varieties on site.
