About Trier
Trier: Rome North of the Alps
Trier holds the title of Germany's oldest city, founded as Augusta Treverorum around 16 BC on the west bank of the Moselle River. Four UNESCO World Heritage Sites sit within walking distance of each other: the Porta Nigra gate (built c. 170 AD), the Roman Amphitheatre, the Imperial Baths (Kaiserthermen), and the Constantine Basilica. No other German city concentrates this density of intact Roman infrastructure. The medieval Trier Cathedral (Dom), consecrated in 326 AD, adds a second historical layer above the Roman foundations.
Where to Stay
Most hotels cluster in the Altstadt (old town), within 500 m of the Porta Nigra. The Petrisberg hill district, east of the centre, offers quieter guesthouses with views over the Moselle valley. Budget options concentrate near the Hauptbahnhof, a 12-minute walk from the Dom.
Practical Tips
- Getting there: Trier Hauptbahnhof connects to Koblenz (1 hr 20 min by regional train) and Luxembourg City (50 min).
- Card: The Trier Card covers public transport and museum entry for 3 days.
- Season: July and August bring the highest visitor numbers; May and September offer mild temperatures with shorter queues at Roman sites.
- Wine: The surrounding Moselle Valley produces Riesling; several wine bars operate in the Altstadt near Hauptmarkt square.
